<B>Uncle Tom's Cabin Stoneware Pitcher.</B></I> 7" high, manufactured by Ridgway & Abington, Staffordshire, England, ca. 1850s. Pale olive ware with a flat exterior finish similar to that found on Wedgewood ceramics. The pitcher's one handle is molded in the form of a slave supplicant while the sides are decorated with high relief anti-slavery vignettes. One image, reproducing the most famous scene from <I>Uncle Tom's Cabin,</B></I> shows Liza and little Harry escaping slavery across the frozen Ohio River. The other side depicts a slave auction wherein the buyers lounge about contentedly while the "merchandise" weeps. The underside of this piece is stamped by the maker and is dated January 1, 1853. Overall excellent condition with no evidence of defects.
