<B>Ulysses S. Grant, </B></I><B><I>Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant</B></I></B></I> (New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885-86), two volumes, 584 and 647 pages, respectively, illustrated, black-cloth bindings with gold lettering and decorations, 8vo (9.25" x 6.25"). During the final days of his life in 1885, former President U. S. Grant struggled valiantly to complete this mammoth yet clear and concise autobiography focusing heavily on his command during the Civil War. Five days after he finished the manuscript, he passed away, and Mark Twain accepted the responsibility of overseeing its publication.
