<B>Ulysses S. Grant Campaign Paperweight</B></I> cast in steel and painted to simulate brass, circa 1880. This rare bust of General Grant is marked on the underside by the venerable sword-maker, Ames Manufacturing Co. of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Sullivan notes a similar piece made by Ames for Benjamin Butler's 1884 presidential run. Given the striking similarity between the Butler and Grant pieces, it seems highly probable that the latter paperweight was issued in 1880 when Grant was considering a third term. Items from 1880 featuring Grant as a hopeful are well-documented and this piece would fit well in a collection of these. Extra fine condition with only slight paint loss on the base's contact points. The first example we have ever encountered. Viewed from above it appears as-made. 2.5" x 3". <BR><BR><B>Important notice:
