Grant<BR></B></I> (New York: Century Co., 1895) Vol. 1, frontis. portrait, xx (xviii & xix are Key to Cited Marginal Annotations in both volumes), 525 apes, Vol. 2, frontis portrait, xvi, 517 pages, appendix, index to both volumes, 8vo, Second Edition, marbled boards, gilt top. Both volumes are lightly scuffed with the gilding quite bright. Both volumes are fully inscribed by Grant’s widow, “<I>My Dear Mrs. Julia, I know you will be interested in reading these “Memoirs”. For they tell not only of a great man but of a noble and good man. Lorrent, Mo</B></I>. ? <I>Sept. 8th ’97 Julia D. Grant.</B></I>”<BR><BR>The first volume has 18 battle maps of which 6 are full page plates, 7 illustrations of which 6 are full page plates and the facsimile of the hand written Terms of Surrender of Fort Donelson is a double fold-out. The second volume has 25 battle maps of which all but one are full page plates and 2 are fold-outs, including Important Battles of the Civil War; 11 illustrations including facsimile of Lincoln's "God-speed" to Grant and facsimile of General Grant's Dispatch Announcing the Surrender of General Lee, from "Appomattox C. H. Va." dated "Apr. 9th 1865, 4.30 o'clock pm." The set is complete with all endpapers, maps & illustration plates intact, text is quite bright white, crisp and clean.
