Ultra-Rare Cased Presentation SS Social Welfare Dagger with Hangers and Portepee
Cased SS Social Welfare Dagger professionally engraved on the reverse lagnet with SS runes and the four-line inscription: "Gruppenfuhrer Prof. Dr. med. K. Gebhard 31.5.44". This rare dagger has a plated spear-point blade with black leather buffer pad. The hilt has a nickel-plated pommel and crossguard with ribbed orange plastic grip. The crossguard has two oval lagnets; the reverse bears the inscription and the obverse features a relief eagle and swastika above a cross. Attached to the hilt is a silver bullion portepee with rare blue velvet acorn center. The dagger has a nickel-plated, pebbled, scabbard with two suspension bands. The suspension bands have circular holes. The fitted case is complete with a set of silver and black Social Welfare hangers. The hangers have nickel-plated, pebbled, buckles, keepers and belt clip. The dagger is complete with the original, brown, leatherette presentation case. The case has a blue silk and velvet lining and is fitted to the dagger, scabbard, portepee and hangers. The dagger is accompanied by a detailed description and letter of authenticity from noted author and German edged weapon expert LTC Thomas M. Johnson and a photocopy of the 1944 SS rank list that includes Prof. Dr. Karl Gebhard. This dagger is also pictured and described in the book "German Daggers of WWII" by Thomas Johnson. This is an ultra-rare WWII SS presentation dagger complete with presentation case, hanger and portepee.

Condition: Excellent. The blade is bright with some minor, scattered, age spotting. The lagnets, counter-guard and pommel have nearly all of the original nickel-plated finish. The grip has several minor scratches on the reverse side but remains in excellent condition. The aluminum bullion portepee is in excellent condition with minimal wear. The scabbard is in excellent condition with nearly all of the original nickel-plated finish. The hangers are excellent with some minor flaking on the suspension clips. The leatherette case is in very fine condition with some light handling and storage wear, and one minor repair on the lower left corner and the lid partially detached. The velvet and silk lining is bright and remains in excellent condition. This is an excellent and well documented example of an extremely rare, presentation SS Social Welfare Dagger.
