"Ultra-Rare” 1794 Talbot, Allum & Lee PLAIN EDGE Cent The Sole Only Specimen Certified by PCGS In Any Grade! R-7+
1794 Talbot, Allum & Lee Cent. PLAIN EDGE. (Rare edge). With NEW YORK type, Breen-1031. W-8575 variety. PCGS graded Extremely Fine-45.
Considered to be Rarity-7 with (according to Walter Breen), "3 or 4 known. This is a lovely piece as well. Certified by PCGS graded Extremely Fine-45, this important 1794 Talbot, Allum & Lee Cent, "Plain Edge" and with New York variety is rated as a major Rarity-7+ (Walter Breen states that 3 or 4 Specimens Known). A very rare variety with a completely natural edge and no trace of any lettering whatsoever. Normally, the lettering was applied using a Casting machine in a process completely separate from the striking of the coin. Here, then, is a rare instance of a planchet that skipped an important production step. This example has pleasing, chocolate brown color and has nice details, smooth hard surfaces and just a slight gloss on the high points. Although the GUIDEBOOK does not list any specific price on this important "Ultra-Rarity," it does make the special separate notation: “Rare plain edge specimens of both dates exist.” No PCGS Certified Colonial Coin Collection Can Be Complete as after two decades of PCGS Colonial coin grading, this is the Only Sole Certified Example of this Variety in any grade.
