This is an exceedingly rare example of a factory documented .50 Express Smoothbore Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Winchester Arms Museum letter. The Winchester Arms Museum letter describes the piece as: "Rifle, 50 Express, Octagon barrel, Plain trigger, Smoothbore" and states that it was received in the Winchester warehouse on April 16, 1909 and shipped out the next day. The rifle has a 26-inch full octagon barrel, full length magazine and crescent steel buttplate. The barrel is fitted with a dovetail mounted Winchester Express front sight with silver bead and scarce Winchester Express rear sight with folding 50, 100 and 200 yard leaves. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver have a blue finish. The hammer, lever and crescent steel buttplate are color casehardened. The straight grain walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. PAT. OCT. 14 1884. JAN. 20 1885." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "50-EX." is stamped on the left barrel flat. The oval "WP" Winchester proofmark is stamped on the top barrel flat in front of the receiver and on the top of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1886/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three lines. The lower receiver tang is stamped with the "1884/1885" patent dates in two lines behind the trigger and the serial number, "145204A", between the tang screws. A copy of Winchester factory records from the Buffalo Bill Historical Center states that out of the approximately 150,200 original serial number records only 15 Model 1886 Winchester Rifles chambered for the .50 Express Cartridge were manufactured with smoothbore barrels. 6 in 50 Express, 1 in 50 Express A, 7 in 50/110 and 1 in 50/100/450. Also accompanying this rifle is a copy of a handwritten letter from famous author and Winchester expert George Madis who states the following in the letter "I have carefully examined this rare Winchester inside and out, and have determined it is all original as made by Winchester." In the letter Madis states that the magazine retaining bands on the 50 Express rifles in this serial number range have the unusual feature of not having a retaining pin through them, a feature he states is found only on 50 Express rifles and some others with takedown or other special features. That in keeping with the Express caliber, the front sight is the "Winchester Express" style, which is found very infrequently, even on Express rifles. The rear sight was also designated as the "Winchester Express" type with short yardage leaves. He explains that the markings on a few rifles in this serial number range are of smaller size and have somewhat different characters than standard arms and that this has been observed only on smooth bore rifles or others with special features. Madis states that "All markings on the gun are original, correct and unaltered. Serial numbers in this series were stamped in script characters, and in the case of this rifle were deeply stamped." Madis also goes into the various markings of inspectors, assemblers and fitters found on the receiver tangs, buttplate and visible parts of the rifle. Because the receiver, forend tips, buttplate and some other parts were casehardened, the blue finish on these parts have less blue than others. Some of the parts mentioned as well as muzzles were given a high polish and left bright. On this rifle these parts are still bright and have not been altered. Madis also states that the bore and chamber "are unusually good, and it is possible the gun saw little use and may be unfired." Madis concludes by writing "Because of the great rarity, originality, age of almost a century and fine condition, Number 145204 merits a prominent place in any collection or museum". This is without a doubt an extremely rare and documented Winchester Model 1886 Rifle authenticated by Winchester expert George Madis.
BBL: 26 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 50 express
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 145204A
Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 60% plus of the original blue finish overall. The barrel, magazine and forearm cap has 75% of the original blue finish intact. The right side of the receiver retains 70% of the thinning blue finish. The top, bottom and left side of the receiver show handling wear and the original blue finish has faded mostly to a dark, silver-gray, patina. The hammer retains most of the original case colors. The casehardened finish on the lever and buttplate have faded to silver-gray. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. The bore is bright. The stock and forearm are both in fine condition and retain about half of the varnish finish with some scattered, minor handling marks. This is a fully documented example or a rare, possibly one-of-a-kind, Winchester Model 1886 .50 Express Sporting Rifle with special order smoothbore barrel. This rifle would be a prominent piece in the most advanced Winchester collection.
