Only known example, illustrated on page 242, Blades and Barrels by H. Gordon Frost. Made by Regnier and marked "Briquet Defensif du Gen. Regnier", which translates to English, "General Regnier's Defensive Lighter." Designed to protect a home-owner from an intruder by providing a flash type light with a defensive weapon in the form of a spike bayonet. French or Belguim, 18th Century style and Frost in "Glades and Barrels" describes this oddity as the ultimate "oddity of Oddities." The pistol/lighter has a normal Flintlock lock and stock with tin flash catcher and flashlight lens attached to catch fire from flint sparking and ignite a canole. A serious piercing blade mounted into forestock measures 7" in length. The condition is very good plus with natural brown patina that covers metal and light with no cleaning or polishing. The markings are clear and crisp. The wood is very good with small chips of wood missing at forend and around front edge near grip cap that has a loop for lanyard. A museum quality rarity that was housed in the Eddie Reider Collection and Herb Ratner Collection who both considered it a crown jewel in the oddity, lighter and firearms fields.
