This piece is part of her Ground series in which she photographs interiors and landscapes. The use of the word "ground" comes not from the earth on which we place our feet, but the peripheral space that humans remain unaware of until it is isolated and captured. Barth is able to capture a foreground or background so precisely that her images actually increase our optical perception and awareness. These beautiful blurred images are created by focusing the camera on a close plane of space. Because there is such a shallow depth of field, the camera functions like a human eye and is unable to achieve clarity and sharpness. Although photography is a media normally used to record information, the playfulness of Barth's lack of subject and focus opens up her monochromatic fields of color to the viewer's interpretation and participation. For some it may evoke a distant memory, while for others the image might transform itself into an entire setting, whether familiar or imagined.
