This is a set of three pictures of the USS Salem (CL-3) in a single frame. The frame measures 38 by 14 1/2 inches. The pictures are in excellent condition. The frame is from the early 1900's and is in very good condition. There are a few beads missing from the upper right hand corner. The mat is discolored and has a water stain in the upper right hand corner. The pictures show both the port and starboard sides of the ship. The center picture shows a front view of the ship at a slight angle. The pictures have the following hand printed in the negative: 18673 - USS Salem, copyright 1908 by N. L. Stebbins, Boston, run 7 - south - 25.57 knots; 18675 - USS Salem, copyright 1908 by N. L. Stebbins, Boston, run 9 - south - 26.08 knots; and 18676 - USS Salem; copyright 1908 by N. L. Stebbins, Boston; run ? - South - 26.05 knots. This ship was the first of three USS Salem?s. It was a Chester class scout cruiser. It was one of the first turbine-engine warships, and along with three sister ships served as test platforms. It was also the first ship named after Salem, Massachusetts. It was in service from 1908 to 1921, so these pictures may be from one of its first sea trials. Thanks for looking.
