This is a brass model of a deck gun from the U.S. submarine Narwhal (SS-167). The Narwhal was launched on December 17, 1929 and was one of five docked submarines caught by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. During the Japanese attack that would launch the United States into World War II, Narwhal's gunners assisted in the destruction of two torpedo planes. The Narwhal participated in 15 war patrols before being decommissioned on April 23, 1945. Today Narwhal's two 6 inch guns are on display at the Naval Submarine Base New London, Groton, Connecticut. This is a brass model of one of Narwhal's 6 inch guns with the barrel measuring 18 3/4 inches long, 6 inches tall with barrel in horizontal position. The barrel swivels a full 360 degrees. The gun is mounted on a wood base.
