USA, large bronze medal, dated 1812, Captain Isaac Hull / USS Constitution battling HMS Guerriere, by J. Reich, PCGS SP63, finest and only example in PCGS census. Julian-NA-12. 65mm. Obverse: bust of Captain Hull facing left, legend around ISAACUS HULL PERITOS ARTE SUPERAT JUL. MDCCCXII [ET] AUG. CERTAMINE FORTES, R. (for Reich) on truncation. Reverse: the USS Constitution battling the HMS Guerriere during the War of 1812, legend above HORAE MOMENTO VICTORIA and INTER CONST. NAV. AMER. ET GUER. ANGL. in exergue. Edge: plain. Very rare commemorative medal honoring the USS Constitution and her victory over the HMS Guerriere during the War of 1812 while commanded by Captain Isaac Hull. During the battle, British cannonballs fired at her bounced harmlessly off her white oak hull, leading to her nickname "Old Ironsides." Today, the USS Constitution is the oldest ship still afloat and a source of pride for the United States Navy. Designed by engraver John Reich with a scant mintage of 126 pieces in copper. Smooth brown surfaces with sharply rendered details front and back, plentiful red mint luster across the naval battle scene on the reverse. Please use this link to verify the certification number
