USA and France - Washington Before Boston, 1776 Lightweight, Original Dies, each side struck separately and joined. Copper, 68 mm 39.5 grams. Obverse: Bust of George Washington, right. GEORGIO WASHINGTON SVPREMO DVCI EXERCITVVM ADSERTORI LIBERTATIS. In exergue: COMITIA AMERICANA Signed below bust, DU VIVIER PARIS F. Reverse: HOSTIBUS PRIMO FUGATIS Washington, with three others, all on horseback, looking across the river at Boston, preparing their attack. In exergue: BOSTONIUM RECUPERATUM XVII MARTIII MDCCLXVI. This piece has every indication of having been struck with the first dies. There are the three die breaks on the obverse; one above the E in ADSERTORI, one to the left of the lower curl in the hair, and one below the M in SUPREMO, another above the R. There are four ledges under Washington's horse on the reverse. Both sides appear to have been struck separately, on thin blanks or thinly cut from heavier blanks, and subsequently joined together. Both sides show a slight waviness in the fields, due to the very thin fabrics struck under high pressure. Were these test pieces later combined?
