US Springfield Third-Type M1875 Officer's Trapdoor Rifle, .45-70 caliber, NSNV. Trapdoor breechblock marked "US/MODEL/1878", barrel breech left side marked "V/P/[eagle head]/P" with tiny "R" on top of breech.26-inch round barrel with two-position, flip-up globe-type front sight and standard ladder-type rear sight. Blued barrel, breech, rear sight, Vernier long-range sight (mounted on stock wrist), ramrod tube, barrel band and retainer spring, buttplate and screws. Case-hardened upper tang, trapdoor, hammer, lockplate, trigger and triggerguard. Finely scroll-engraved lockplate, with stamped American eagle and shield and "U.S.SPRINGFIELD" markings. Matching scroll engraved on trapdoor, hammer, upper tang, triggerguard, barrel band, and buttplate. "U.S." on top of heel of buttplate. Flip-up, stock-wrist-mounted Vernier long-range peepsight.
