This is an early rare U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trap Door single shot carbine in a 45-70 Gov't. The piece was manufactured from Jan-Mar. 1874 and has a serial number of 10,551. The carbine falls into the general range for the U.S. 7TH Cavalry Custer Battle of the Little Bighorn and the U.S. 2ND AND 3RD Cavalry units which accompanied Custer in and around Fort Abe Lincoln. The Springfield carbine has a 22" round blue finish barrel. The carbine has a serial number of 10,551 placing this as a second year carbine circa 1874. Very rare early piece. The piece shows all the correct markings including, "Model 1873 (eagle head and crossed arrows) U.S." on the top of the trap door, "10551" on the receiver frame, "U.S. Springfield (with the eagle holding the shield and arrows)" on the lock plate, "U.S." marked metal crescent butte plate, and "A" marked trigger guard/trigger frame.
