For your bidding pleasure is this US Pacific Railroad Collection Hand Colored Surveys. The U.S. government sponsored an extensive series of expeditions designed to gather information about the new territories that had been acquired in western North America, during the 1850's. With the discovery of gold in California stimulating the American imagination and further traffic westward, Congress commissioned Army Topographic Bureau to conduct extensive surveys to find suitable routes for a transcontinental railroad. There were six major expeditions; five of them covered the area between the Great Plains and west coast, and the sixth explored the coastal states of California and Oregon. All of these expeditions were accompanied by naturalists and artists to document the landscape, flora and fauna along the route. The reports, maps and lithographs were published in the 13 volume report "Explorations and Surveys to ascertain the most practicable and economical route for a Railroad from the Mississippi river to the Pacific Ocean." This lot is a very captivating collection of ten plates from three different different volumes of railroad surveys. In this collection are such titled plates as: "Teton Valley", "Fort Owen-Flathead Village", "Fort Benton", "Reptiles", and many more... The measurements of each plate range from 10 1/2" x 7 5/8" to 11" x 8 1/4".
