Civil War-dated assemblage of fifteen documents and letters related to US Naval Officer David Negley Bell, a midshipman of the USS Powhatan, dated between 1844 and 1870. Highlights include two documents signed by Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, and an LS signed by Rear Admiral David D. Porter, in part: “In obedience to the instructions of the Navy Department of the 22nd inst. you are hereby detached from the Naval Academy, & will consider yourself as waiting orders.” Other notable signers include: Thornton A. Jenkins (4), Egbert Thompson, T. A. Howard, G. S. Blake, and E. T. Nichols. Includes two uncut bank check sheets assigned by the Paymaster in the United States Navy. In overall very good to fine condition.
