Auction Date:2009 Jun 24 @ 10:00 (UTC-04:00 : AST/EDT)
Location:6270 Este Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45232, United States
a massive 13.75” x 18” leather bound album containing 168 cabinet cards, each 4.5” x 6.5” with fancy gilded imprint of G.W. Pach & Bros., New York. The front board is further inscribed with the name E.P. Pendleton, certainly Cadet Edwin Palmer Pendleton (22) ’79.

The index page is blank but the first 60 slots contain President R.B. Hayes (signed) and former President Grant together with 48 mostly unidentified uniformed army officers plus 10 unknown civilians, all staff and faculty at West Point. Just a couple of the officers are readily identifiable including a fine autographed General Sherman signed W.T. Sherman beneath portrait with Major General Thomas Ruger, former Academy Superintendent 1871-76.

The middle portion of the album contains 73 cabinet cards of cadets of the Class of 1879. Seventy are autographed with name and hometown inked on cardstock inserted beneath the portrait. Two are missing identifications. The remaining 35 cabinet cards are various outdoor views — Class of ’79 group photographs, statues and memorials, Gothic architecture, cadets at parade — and obligatory interior shots of the West Point grounds and buildings — the chapel, library, and mortar battery – overlooking the Hudson River, including two stunning panoramas, one of which could have only been photographed from a balloon. Two other cabinet cards are tinted illustrations of the cameo Class of ’79 ring.

All 67 graduates of the Class of 1879 are inserted with their autographs generally in alphabetical order. The majority of the class forged substantial military careers spanning decades as they advanced through the tedium of the army’s peacetime bureaucracy. Three officers had 40 plus years of service upon retirement in the early 20’s. Relatively few ever saw combat, although two captains, Saffold and Steele, were killed in action in the Philippines. Some made significant contributions in the area of applied science and civil engineering. Others resigned shortly after graduating the Academy and achieved success as captains of industry and commerce as America was transformed by the iron rails of Manifest Destiny and the industrial revolution. Reflecting the mortality of the times, a fair number of younger officers died in service. The Great War in Europe delayed retirement for the aging Class of ’79 and provided a final stage for their services. Among the 'lifer's' one, Hunter Liggett, rose to the rank of Lieutenant General commanding 1st Army in the A.E.F. Three were major generals including A. L. Mills, F. H. French, and H.A. Greene along with 10 brigadiers, four of whom commanded divisions and brigades either stateside or in France. Twenty-one of the Class of '79 retired as full bird colonels. Three extraordinary officers, Lloyd M. Brett, Thomas A. Cruse, and Albert L. Mills, were awarded the CMOH, the first two for Indian War and Mills for Spanish-American War heroism, while Brett added a DSM for the First War. Other graduates received foreign awards and honors from France, England, and Japan.
