Dark blue worsted US McDowell pattern cavalry kepi that has a 5.25? high crown at its highest, 3.75? high at the front, and a 5.25? diameter top disk. The top disk has a large, die-struck, sheet brass, crossed saber cavalry insignia over the regimental number (“10”), and surmounted by the company letter (“L”). The insignia and unit signifiers are held in place by short pieces of old leather, visible on the underside of the disk. The wool is in fine condition with a few minor spots of insect damage scattered about the cloth, and a very small stitched repair on the edge of the top disk. The rounded, tarred leather peak has retained its shape well, and does exhibit some mild crazing on both the top and underside. The tarred leather chinstrap is affixed by two brass general service eagle buttons, and is in fine shape with some dark tarnish to both the buttons and the brass buckle, as well as some further crazing along the length of the tarred finish. The interior of the kepi has an intact brown leather comfort band, sewn into the intact brown polished cotton lining. The underside of the top disk has a partial paper label that reads: “No. 3, N.Y.” (only the bottom portion of the label remains). A fantastic piece of Civil War headwear.
