First Recognition of the American Flag by a Foreign Government Lithograph by Edward Moran c. 1898. This lithograph print is thought to have been made for the original artist Edward Moran about 1898. The print is titled the "First Recognition of the American Flag by a Foreign Government" depicting: "the United Stated Ship Ranger in command by John Paul Jones" entering a "harbor at Quiberon, France on February 13, 1778". Published by Fishel, Adler, and Schwartz of New York and printed in Austria. The print measures 31 in. X 19 in. and framed at 24 in. X 36 in. The paper has darkened with age and may have been originally re-touched or color enhanced by the artist. Looking closely, the vessel Ranger is passing by other sailing vessels where one is giving the Ranger a cannon salute behind the Ranger under sail; not to be confused with being under attack. All French vessels depicted have a full range of signal flags displayed while the Ranger proudly displays Old Glory at the top gallant mast and again at the beam. This framing may be original to the print and quite heavy. The backing shows considerable age. A must-have for any naval historian. Please see the photo for details.
