US Government Escape and Evasion Barter Kit
United States Government Escape and Evasion Barter Kit. 3.75” x 4.5” x .75”, 289.6 grams, black rubber sealed case, with “If Found Return to ComNavAirLant (CNAL 34) Norfolk, Virginia” molded in raised letters on each side, with “1455” crudely scratched on one side. Escape and evasion kits of this type were typically issued to military pilots to be used for barter in the event they were shot down behind enemy lines. This particular kit is designated the “Atlantic Kit” and contains approximately .90 troy ounces (.75 troy ounces for coins, .15 troy ounces for rings) of fine gold. A brochure from the Department of Defense Logistics Agency indicates that the case consists of: one 20 Franc gold coin, one 10 Franc gold coin, one 1 pound Sovereign gold coin (British of South African mintage), two ½ pound Sovereign gold coins (British or South African mintage), and three gold rings either plain or embossed. The sides of the rubber case look to have been partially pried open but the weight, when compared with another unopened example is almost identical so it is assumed all contents are still complete. Curiosity got the better of a former owner and they took a peek inside. The kit is sold with the original Defense Department brochure, and original bid forms from the 1980 auction where the kits were sold via sealed bid.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
