Printed pamphlet entitled “A Constitution or Frame of Government,” printed by Benjamin Edes & Sons, Boston: 1780, 32 pages (pages 33 through 54 missing), unbound, 6 x 9, the important first printing of the first Massachusetts state Constitution, a document of capital importance in the framing of subsequent state constitutions and eventually the United States Constitution. The present constitution begins with a long declaration of the rights of Massachusetts citizens (including freedom of the press and from unreasonable searches), and then spells out the roles and powers of the executive, legislative and judicial branches. In very good condition, with aforementioned missing pages, scattered edge wear and chips, and a pencil notation to front cover.
