US Civil War Spencer Model 1860 Cavalry Carbine
This is an exceedingly rare original Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. Model 1860 Saddle Ring Carbine used by Union Cavarly during the U.S. Civil War. The Model 1860 was manufactured between 1863-1865 and features a lowered silver blade front sight and adjustable rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The top of the receiver is marked, "SPENCER REPEATING - RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS. - PAT'D MARCH 6. 1860." The carbine also features a 22" round heavy barrel showing the original brown finish in very good condition. The rifle is all original and is truly an excellent piece. The barrel is marked under the walnut foregrip/forestock, "PM - 43173 - 6 - SR." The receiver is also marked on the left side, "M" and "43173" behind the falling block. The left side of the original walnut stock shows the Saddle Ring and sling bar along with the two original cartouche marks in the wood, "DAP (in a rectangle" and "EAP (in a rectangle)". The carbine has a crescent metal butt stock end with the original removable seven round magazine. The rare piece would have been used by U.S. Union Cavalry Officers and later used in the Indian Wars era. The Spencer Repeating Rifle was used at the Washita Battle in 1868 along with a a few that have been recorded as being used at the Battle of the Little Bighorn / Custer Battlefield. The firearm features a manually operated lever action rolling block with a seven shot magazine and was designed by Christopher Spencer. This rifle is in a .56-50 Spencer Rimfire Caliber and shows a six groove rifling bore in good condition. The barrel and wood show very good to good condition and the receiver shows good overall condition for its age (review pictures for condition report). Very rare to have the original cartouche markings on the stock and good condition in such a rare carbine. Serial Number of 43173, manufactured from 1863-1865. Antique Firearm requires NO FFL.
