US Civil War Model 1862 Cavalry Saber & Scabbard
Included in this lot we have a Model 1862 US cavalry saber and scabbard originating from the Civil war era. This sword is a model 1862 also known as M1862 and was manufactured by Mansfield & Lamb. The piece shows a steel blade with a solid brass guard and a leather and brass wrapped wood handle. The blade is marked "US C.E." with a serial number across the bottom. The pommel of the sword is marked "88". The scabbard shows simple metal construction with two attachment point rings. The sword was used prominently in the American Civil War and replaced out the larger and heavier m1840 cavalry saber. The M1862 was used to outfit light cavalry units as well as officers such as George Armstrong Custer and J.E.B. Stuart. The sword shows good condition overall for its age with some light pitting on the blade. The sword measures 40 3/4" long overall with a 34 1/2" long blade.
