US AIR FORCE 6510TH USAF HOSPITAL FLAG.
3’ x 4’ double applique embroidered on ultramarine blue field and features the unit’s crest of caduceus, SR 71, & missile surmounted by the Air Force eagle and the thirteen white stars, gold fringe. The 6510th was the primary hospital at Edwards Air Force Base in California from 1951 through 1973. Edwards with beginnings in 1930s built on massive flat dry lake was perfect for testing experimental jet aircraft and retains legacy as America’s primary military aircraft testing base. Edwards Air Force base named in honor of a test pilot, Captain Glen Edwards, who was killed while flying the YB-49 Flying Wing bomber in 1948. The base has hosted such famous events as Major Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier in the Bell X-1, development and testing of the Century series of Air Force fighters (F-1oo through F-106) and the X-15 rocket plane which became the first aircraft to break Mach 4. The super-secret SR-71 high altitude reconnaissance plane was tested here that is part of flag’s crest as well as the first and current stealth aircraft in AF inventory. CONDITION: fine.
