UPPER YANKTON CHIEF BY ALEXANDER GARDNER. Albumen photograph, 5 x 7.5" mounted on larger board. Identified in negative as an Upper Yankontai and on typed strip label as "Afraid of the Bear." A contact print from a negative probably taken by Gardner in 1872 in his Washington, studio, printed later by the Bureau of American Ethnology. From the Rookwood Pottery files and purchased when the business moved in the early 1960s. With Rookwood's typed strip label on recto and handstamp on verso. Print EXC, mount with surface dirt.
