UNUSUAL SINGLE SHOT RIFLE.
UNUSUAL SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal .32. 20” round bbl. A letter accompanying the lot indicates that this rifle was made by Granville Henry, brother of B. Tyler Henry of Winchester fame. Also included is an article form the February 1987 American Riflemen showing a similar rifle and attributing it to the Henry family of Boulton. PA. According to this article about 1,000 of the Henry rifles were made from 1876 to 1892. The article also gives some of the Henry family’s genealogy and does not demonstrate any kinship between Granville and B. Tyler. This rifle is different from the one shown in the article in many respects. About the only similarity is the fact that both have a bbl which turns to the left for loading. This action is almost identical to the Moore, National and Colt Deringers. The stock and other work on this rifle are more Kentucky than Pennsylvania. The sawback tang looks like that made by Benjamin Mills and his followers. The use of iron fittings also indicates Southern manufacture. The patchbox is from a Sharps Civil War carbine. Maple stock. SN 18 or 81. CONDITION: Gray brown patina with even moderate pitting on breech and lockplate. Other metal has light pitting. The gun has been broken in two in the lock area and partially repaired but is not quite aligned. Trigger guard has been welded. Stock has been repaired and refinished. A large chip is missing on the right side of the tang. Mechanically functional. 4-49480 FS270
