UNTOUCHED LEECH AND RIGDON SWORD COLLECTED BY MICKLE.
UNTOUCHED LEECH AND RIGDON SWORD COLLECTED BY MICKLE. An oustanding Leech and Rigdon sword, descended directly from Captain William H. Mickle, of the 134th New York Volunteer Infantry. Mickle served the entire war, was wounded at Gettysburg, participated in the battle of Lookout Mountain, the entire Atlanta campaign and was with Sherman's March. This sword was among his effects, along with other souvenirs he collected during the March (several books, a candle-stick, and some CSA correspondence). We assume this sword was captured at some point after the fall of Atlanta. It is mentioned indirectly in a 1914 newspaper clipping about his 50th Wedding Anniversary: "For the golden wedding Monday the house was very pretty. As you entered the hall you first saw the fine large engraving "The First Blow for Liberty," with three swords together with sash and other accoutrements hung about it. One sword was that of a Confederate captain and was captured in Georgia, another was captured in South Carolina, the third, a newer one, was the gift of friends to Captain Mickle." The blade is 33" in length, grey in color, and acid-etched with floral and martial motifs. The initials "CS" are present on the left side. There is one TINY nick in the blade, and a couple of areas of very minor surficial rust, otherwise it is in very good condition. The cast brass basket is decorated with geometric scrolls and oval cartouche with "CS" in the center. The capstain rivet at the pommel is decorated with an equal-armed cross and 10 circular stamps. The grip is leather and wire wrapped, and generally in very good condition, with just a few scuffs. The total length of the sword is slightly more than 39." The scabbard is polished steel, fitted with a 6.25" brass drag, and two brass carrying mounts. One ring is present, the other missing. The scabbard is grey in color, and in fine condition. A very fine, and untouched sword from one of the premier makers of the south. Together with a copy of the newspaper clipping.
