UNITED STATES, set of three coins in NGC Shipwreck Effect holders: gold Coronet Liberty Head double eagle ($20) 1861; gold Coronet Liberty Head eagle ($10) 1856-S; silver Seated Liberty half dollar (50c) 1861-O, Confederate States issue (die W-13), NGC. 7½" x 4". This incredible set shows off the range of S.S. Republic shipwreck coins with three different denominations across three different mints from across the country. The 1861 $20 is particularly choice and Mint State with significant cartwheel luster. The 1856-S $10 is a very scarce date from the wreck with just 27 examples recovered as stated in "The SS Republic Shipwreck Excavation Project: the Coin Collection" by Q. David Bowers; it grades AU with some minor surface chatter but retains substantial mint luster. The sea-salved 1861-O half dollar struck by the Confederate States of America completes the set by illustrating the shipwreck's ties to the Civil War. This is a trophy set that would fit well in a major shipwreck collector's collection. Recovered from: S.S. Republic, sunk in 1865 off Georgia
