UNIQUE RELIC OF AMERICAN CIVIL WAR FIELD HOSPITAL CAMP LETTERMAN-GETTYSBURG 1863.
UNIQUE RELIC OF AMERICAN CIVIL WAR FIELD HOSPITAL CAMP LETTERMAN-GETTYSBURG 1863. The following standard or sign is an important Gettysburg related artifact. The sign is fashioned of leather and metal over a wooden frame-extremely well made. It measures approximately 20" h x 33" w. Its form is a rectangle with a triangle superimposed having the following embossed upon the metal panel within: “CAMP LETTERMAN/H*Q/1863" the entire composition gives one the impression of field fabrication being, somewhat, very primitive in its appearance, yet very well made. The leather and metal surfaces are painted and are decorated with silvered and brass bosses and stars. A replacement halberg with a large “G" on the face of the axe (a museum copy) would have probably held the sign. Camp Letterman, as the hospital was called in honor of the Army of the Potomac’s medical director, was established as a temporary field hospital treating nearly 4,200 wounded soldiers following the Battle of Gettysburg. The massive hospital consisted of nearly 500 tents over an area of approximately 80 acres. Established shortly after the Battle of Gettysburg, the hospital was disbanded in late November 1863. A rare, unique and most important Gettysburg relic. From the early collection of Chaplain Erasmus Jones (late Chaplain of the 21st U.S.C.T.) this sign has been in a museum collection in England from the 1930’s to the 1950’s and another very famous banner from the Chaplain E. Jones collection relating to the emancipation proclamation was just sold for a record price. CONDITION: Good. The leather is stiff and broken in many areas, colors are faded. 4-50010 CW
