(UNION OFFICER`S LETTER GROUPING)
A fine letter group from a high ranking Union infantry officer in Gen. Marcellus Crocker's division, consisting of four letters, 8pp. total, 4to. and folio, from June 21, 1863 to Nov. 28, 1863, concerning the siege of Vicksburg campaign and operations afterwards, in part: "…[6/21/63]...a general bombardment of Vicksburg was opened from all the batteries along our enter line commencing at 4 A.M…the army was held in readiness preparatory to a charge…my brigade was ready...I took my position near Hoffman's battery and...watched the effect of the shells…our lines [fired]…not less than twelve to fifteen shells per minute…gabions and sandbags were thrown in every direction...the enemy fired quite briskly at first...yesterday the commanding officer of Vicksburg opening all the store houses and told the soldiers to pitch in…the country around is completely devastated, houses and farm houses burnt…the people ran off some to Vicksburg others to Jackson…[Steamer Empress, Vicksburg Nov. 28, 1863]…most happy should I be to get back to Natchez. I am now receiving my arms on the steamer Choctaw ...a couple of twelve lbs. howitzers…Gen. Crocker's recommendation for a brigadiership has gone forward to Grant…I think there is no doubt about his promotion…I am getting so fat that I had a notion to send you my photograph but the day proved cloudy…[ Monday, on the Mississippi]…the captain has just informed me that we stop for a few minutes at Helena…one of our fleet broke down and we were compelled to remain several hours to take on board more troops…The women are terribly secesh and the men little better [at Memphis]…all is desolation, truly these people are getting their rights…". A good group from an officer who appears to be a colonel. Very good to fine.
