(UNION GENERALS)
Good war-date L.S. by Col. Newton B. Lord of the 35th N.Y. Vols., endorsed by three prominent Union generals, "Camp near Bills[?] Landing, Va.", 1p. 4to., Dec. 23, 1862 to Brig. Gen. Thomas Hillhouse recommending that Major John G. Todd be appointed lieutenant colonel of the regiment. At the bottom of the letter is an A.E.S. of Union Brigadier General JAMES S. WADSWORTH (1807-1864), Gettysburg veteran killed at the Wilderness, in part: "...Major Todd is one of the best officers I have met in the Vol. service..." and signs adding his rank; an A.E.S. of Brigadier General GABRIEL R. PAUL (1811-1886), blinded at Gettysburg, who concurs and signs with rank, and an A.E.S. of Brigadier General MARSENA R. PATRICK (1911-1888) who also approves the recommendation, and then writes a lengthy eight line A.E.S. mentioning the candidate's service at the battle of Groveton. Also included is a petition signed by 25 members of the regiment who also seek the man's promotion. Light toning at folds, otherwise very good.
