UMAYYAD OF SPAIN: Sulayman, 1013-1016, AV dinar (3.88g), al-Andalus, AH402, A-A361, Miles—, citing Muhammad as heir apparent (wali al-'ahd) on reverse (the same side as the name Sulayman), without any governor & no name on obverse, unique, VF, RRRR. This is the first reported dinar dated AH402 in the name of Sulayman (Miles referred to 2 coarse silver coins that he notes as "doubtful"). Sulayman ruled for 6½ months in AH400, then was ousted in favor of Hisham II, whose second reign lasted 400-403. However, most of Umayyad Spain emerged in rebellion against Hisham in 402, and it seems likely that this piece was issued by one branch of the opposition, certainly not in Seville, but in some undetermined location. The mint & date on this piece are both perfectly clear.
