(1950s) A slice of Poly-Pop history! Here is a gorgeous carving installed at one of the most mythic venues in Tiki history: The original DON the BEACHCOMBER location in Waikiki, Hawaii. An argument can be made that this was the place that started it all. After the Poly-Pop movement transitioned from the "Tropics Era" to the "Tiki Era", decor followed suit. This hand carved Tiki wall sconce in the style of Hawaiian god, Kanaloa, holding torch which functions as an electric light. It is double sided, so it was most probably mounted as a "blade" or perpendicular configuration, jutting out from a wall to be seen on both sides. The carving is beautiful and a case study of the cultural impressionism of the era. The sconce was refurbished and rewired by none other than LeRoy Schmaltz of Oceanic Arts sometime in the 1980s. Solid wood wall sconce with electric fixture and cord. Acquired in the famous Don the Beachcomber liquidation sale. 36.5"x11.5". VG+ with typical wear from commercial use.
