Ugo Foscolo is best known for his poem Dei Sepolcri. In 1807, Foscolo wrote his Dei Sepolcri, which may be described as a sublime effort to seek refuge in the past from the misery of the present and the darkness of the future. The mighty dead are summoned from their tombs, as ages before they had been in the masterpieces of Greek oratory, to fight again the battles of their country. The inaugural lecture On the origin and duty of literature, delivered by Foscolo in January 1809 when appointed to the chair of Italian eloquence at Pavia, was conceived in the same spirit. In this lecture Foscolo urged his young countrymen to study literature, not in obedience to academic traditions, but in their relation to individual and national life and growth. The sensation produced by this lecture had no slight share in provoking the decree of Napoleon by which the chair of national eloquence was abolished in all the Italian universities. Soon afterwards, Foscolo's tragedy of Ajax was presented, with little success, at Milan, and because of its supposed allusions to Napoleon, he was forced to move from Milan to Tuscany. The chief fruits of his stay in Florence are the tragedy of Ricciarda, the Ode to the Graces, left unfinished, and the completion of his version of the Sentimental Journey (1813). The winning bidder agrees to pay a buyers premium of 33.5% on the hammer price. Plus Icollector 3% commission to Kristen Leigh auctions limited.
We ship worldwide, and accept payment by Visa and MasterCard.

1. All customers have the right to view any lot in advance of the auction via appointment and additionally make any enquiries about any lot as to any provenance we may have. All lots are second hand and aren’t brand new. The U.K. sale of goods 1979 act and The consumer U.K. Rights Act 2015 does not apply to our auction.
2. Kristen Leighs auctions limited has endeavored to accurately describe all items being sold. All items are sold as is, where is, with all faults. There are no warranties or representations of merchant-ability of fitness, nor of any other kind, express or implied. All items are available for your examination prior to bidding by appointment only. Your bidding will signify that you have examined the items as fully as desired, or that you have chosen not to examine them. Kristen Leighs auctions limited acts merely as an agent. The contract of sale is between the consigner and buyer. Kristen Leighs auctions limited holds no responsibility as to authenticity or condition of items.
If a lot is claimed by the Buyer to be a forgery it must be returned to the auction house in the same condition in which it was sold, within 14 days of the date shown on the tracking number. A receipt of the delivery date must be obtained by either a screen print of the couriers website, or the postage proof of delivery on the parcel, together with evidence from two independent experts. If the Auctioneer is satisfied that the claim is justified and that the Buyer is able to transfer a good and
marketable title to the Lot free from any third party claims, the Auctioneer will rescind the sale and refund any amount paid by the Buyer to the Auctioneer.
Any claim by the Buyer under this condition shall be limited to the amount paid by the Buyer to the Auctioneer for the Lot, and does not include auction platforms fees and card processing fees which must be claimed for independently by the customer to the bidding platform and the card company.
2. The auctioneer will be the final judge as to who is the successful bidder. In the event of a dispute, the auctioneer shall at his discretion decide whether or not to reopen the bidding. If an item is withdrawn from auction it will be offered again at the auctioneers discretion. Title to all merchandise shall pass to the successful bidder at the fall of the auctioneers hammer. The purchaser shall assume full responsibility for the lot purchased once title has passed. All lots in the catalogue are subject to a reserve, of which the amount is between Kristen Leighs auctions limited and the consigner. We reserve the right to bid up to the amount of reserve by placing successive or consecutive bids for a lot, or bid in response to other bidders.
POSTAGE:
3.The auction house has at any time the right to void the sale before any lots are shipped and will refund all monies paid within a reasonable amount of time normally within 2 weeks
3a. Invoices will be sent to the winning bidder within 5 days (for postage) of the close of the auction. And payment is due within 3 days of the invoice being sent.
SHIPPING.
A shipping quote is provided by Kristen Leighs auctions limited on invoices and automatically includes tracking, which can be tracked on your end to your address. Insurance isn't included and can be added at an extra cost by contacting us. Please note glass in frames isn't covered by insurance and can be replaced for perspex if need be.
4. In bidding on any lot offered, the bidder indicates acceptance of these terms and conditions. Title of each lot passes when the auctioneer or screen indicates sold. The bidder is responsible for knowing on which item he/she is bidding. If unsure the bidder should inquire or not bid. When becoming the winning bidder at auction, you have affected a contract and will be expected to pay for items in which you were evidenced to be the successful bidder.
All autographed lots (Excluding signed photos) with the hammer price being over the value of £150 will include a third party certificate of authenticity. A certificate of authenticity is an opinion expressed by a company as to it being genuine. We welcome all bidders to do their own research before bidding, and to ask questions before bidding as the winner of a lot will enter into a legally binding contract to pay for the lot. As in condition of a lot, we give no opinions, and items are sold as seen.
