U.S. model 1873 Springfield second-type Officer’s model rifle, .45/70 caliber, detachable pistol grip. Assembly number “27” stamped inside of trigger guard, inside the tang, and on other small interior parts. The gun remains in original good to very good condition showing approx. 70-80% original blue on barrel, evenly drifting and toning with some light erosion and pinprick pitting just starting. The action shows 30-50% case hardening drifting to patina and silvery grey with some faint colors showing lightly. The stock is good to very good with still crisp checkering, some slight wear at high points and edges, some minor dings mars scratches and dents. A small chip of wood is missing from the heel of the stock near the buttplate, with a couple other small chips and minor imperfections. The stock shows a “P” cartouche behind the apex of the checkering at the belly of the stock. The rifle shows correct vernier tang sight, with long base, which is proper on this model. The original front sight, rear sight, and pistol grip are retained and the rifle is original and correct in every way, other than the ram-rod, which is an excellent replication. The action is good, the interior of the breech block shows bright case hardening. The bore is very good. A good example of a second type officer’s model that is unmolested in modern times.
