U.S. model 1873 Springfield first type Officer’s model rifle, .45-70 caliber, numbered “60” inside trigger guard. The rifle remains in very good plus original condition, showing 80-90% original blue on barrel that is evenly thinning and toning with some just starting light aging, minor erosion, and minimal pinprick pitting. A few scratches on the barrel and muzzle. The lock shows 40-60% thinning case hardening drifting to silver as does the hammer and breech block. The trigger guard shows 40-60% thinning original blue. The stock is also good to very good with good to fine checkering, some bruises, dings, mars, scratches, and some wear in front of the lock plate where it appears to have been carried across a saddle and has smoothed the checkering for approx. 1” in front of the block plate. Otherwise stock is very good. The rifle is mounted with an original Springfield-altered Sharps sight which is proper and shows Sharps marking. The buttplate shows 30-40% case hardening drifting to silvery grey, the rear sight shows 30-60% thinning original blue, the rear sight and front sight are correct and the rifle retains its correct ‘first type’ ram rod, which is nickel plated. The interior of the action shows bright case hardening, the bore is near excellent. The action is crisp, set trigger is working. A very nice first model rifle that saw some use, probably on the frontier, and a research number is currently underway identifying the numbers and markings on the interior and trigger guard. Note: Several internal parts are also numbered “60” with a large “D” stamp behind the trigger spring. Est.: $17,500-$35,000
