U.S. model 1817 flintlock pistol, type 2, by Springfield arsenal, .69 caliber smoothbore, 10-3/4” barrel, 17-1/2” overall, brown patina finish, showing eagle over US and Springfield 1818 at rear portion of lock. The pistol is an excellent, almost imperceptible reconversion and the barrel shows no evidence of being welded from the interior and the barrel was never converted to percussion. The hammer, frizzen, spring, and lock parts are expertly made recreations which have been perfectly aged to match the condition of the barrel. The hammer screw shows the number “14”. The breech shows “P” proof, eagle, and “V” with 1818 date. The metal surfaces are good and show a light to moderate erosion and pinprick pitting and have a good appearance. The stock is dark but good with small losses around the lock, some minor dings, mars, dents, no crack at the wrist. A metal tipped ramrod of the correct type is included. The sideplate is either been expertly been cleaned or is a near-perfect replacement. The trigger plate shows a BA inspector’s stamp. More than 90% of these rare Springfield pistols are reconverted and only approx. 600 of the type-two were made. This example is a far above average
