U.S. contract musket by Oliver Bidwell of Middleton, Connecticut model of 1808, dated 1811 in .69 caliber with 44 ½” barrel remaining in good to very good original condition. The lock center is stamped with an eagle and name with U.S. anddate on the rear portion. Refer Flayderman 9A-123 where it states about 1,000 delivered. The metal surfaces show a gray to brown patina finish with some light to moderate pitting and erosion with some slightly heavier pitting in the breech areaand on the butt plate. The stock shows some dings, mars, small losses and light cleaning but is generally good. There is a brass Eagle inlaid into the right side of stock which is old and attractive. There is also a coin shape plaqueinlaid into the wrist which appears to read “ARTIL” over “R.I.” (Rohde Island Artillery?) also with a Springfield style Eagle. The left side of the breech and the barrel shows U.S. inspections and proofs. A scarce War of 1812 period musket.Est.: $1000-$2000
