Manufacturer: Remington Arms Inc Model: 1903 A3
Model 1903A4 rifle manufactured by the Remington Arms Co., in 1943. This is a scarce and desirable "Z-Prefix" Model 1903A4 variant; Remington manufactured fewer than 3,000 "Z-Prefix" Model 1903A4 Sniper Rifles. The rifle is fitted with a commercial Kollmorgen "Bear Cub" 4X telescopic sight with post and cross-hair reticle and commercial rings. The scope body has a gray-green anodized finish. "4X/17403" is stamped on the left side of the windage and adjustment knob boss. "BEAR CUB" followed by the Kollmorgen trademark and "MADE IN U.S.A." and "KOLLMORGEN OPTICAL CORP. NORTHHAMPTON. MASS." are roll-stamped in two lines on the rear of the scope. The scope base is an un-marked military Redfield style base with casehardened adjustment screws. The rifle has the distinctive Model 1903A4 features which include a "Type C" pistol grip stock with bolt relief cut-out, a modified bolt handle, the rear sight is removed to accommodate the scope mount and the barrel has no front sight base or blade. The bolt, buttplate, small bow trigger guard, lower, middle and upper barrel bands, sling swivels and stacking swivel are early production Remington parts with a blue finish. The barrel and receiver are parkerized. The barrel is the two groove style utilized on late production Model 1903A4 rifles. The receiver markings "U.S./REMINGTON/MODEL 03-A3" are rolled to the left side to allow them to be viewed with the scope mount in place. The serial number, "Z4001828" is located on the right side of the receiver below the scope mount. The barrel is roll-stamped "RA" above the Ordnance "Shell and Flame" insignia and the date "9-43". "P" is stamped on the underside of the barrel. All of the bolt components, the magazine cut-off lever, sling and stacking swivels, and the upper barrel band are stamped with the Remington "R" mark. The left side of the stock is stamped "RA" in front of the rear stock bolt and has the Ordnance escutcheon and "FJA" final inspection mark stamped to the rear of the stock bolt. An encircled, block, "P" proof mark is visible on the inside of the pistol grip. Remington sub-inspection marks are stamped on the underside of the stock in front of the floor plate finial. The 2X Weaver 330C, M73B1 or M8 telescopic sights were the standard optics on WWII Model 1903A4 Sniper Rifles. Most surplus Model 1903A4 Sniper Rifles sold by the DCM in the late 1960s had the telescopic sights removed by the Army. The Kollmorgen scope on this rifle appears to be a commercial scope that was installed after the rifle was sold by the DCM.

Serial Number: z4001828
Condition:
Excellent. The rifle retains 97% plus of the blue and parkerized finish. The stock has no rebuild or overhaul marks and there is no indication that the rifle has been overhauled. The buttplate, sling swivels, bolt, trigger guard/floor plate, magazine follower, barrel bands and band springs all have the original Remington high polish blue finish. The stock proof and inspection marks are extremely crisp. The scope is nearly new. The tube has 98-99% of the anodized finish and the optics are excellent. This is an excellent all original example of a scarce "Z-Prefix" Remington Model 1903A4 Sniper Rifle.
