U.S. Winchester Model 1917 Rifle with Bayonet
This Winchester Model 1917 Bolt Action Rifle was manufactured in 1918. This rifle has a blue finish found on production Model 1917 Winchester rifles. The stock and handguard are oil-finished black walnut. The Model 1917 Rifle was the primary service rifle issued to the U.S. Army during WWI. Although manufactured in large numbers, many of the Model 1917 Rifles were over-hauled subsequent to WWI and eventually used in WWII. These rifles were either re-issued for training or sent to Great Britain, China and other allies under the Lend-Lease Program. Model 1917 Rifles in original condition are scarce. The rifle has a bright rear sight face. The receiver screws re-staked. The receiver is roll-stamped: "U.S./MODEL OF 1917/WINCHESTER/178794". The barrel is stamped: "W/Ordnance Shell and Flame/ 2-18". The underside of the bolt handle is stamped with the "W" Winchester production code and "N.S.". The left side of the receiver is stamped with the Ordnance 'Shell and Flame' inspection mark. The stock, butt plate, rear sight and upper barrel band are stamped with the "W" Winchester code. The sling swivel has an "E" Remington/Eddystone production mark. Ordnance "Eagle Head" inspection marks are stamped on the underside of the stock in front and behind the trigger guard. The rifle is complete with a blue gray, R.A.F. canvas sling and Remington British Pattern 14 Bayonet and black leather scabbard. The bayonet is dated "1913". The British inspection marks on the obverse ricasso have been lined out and "U.S." is stamped below them
