U.S. Whitney Model 1841 Mississippi Percussion Rifle with Long Range Rear Sight, Bayonet Lug and Sli
Produced by the Whitney Arms Co., of New Haven, Connecticut in 1855, and later upgraded by the Harper's Ferry Arsenal circa 1855-1856, with changes including a new long range rear sight, a saber bayonet lug brazed to the barrel, a new, shorter barrel band, reboring to 58 caliber and a new iron tulip head ramrod. Blade front sight with brass filler and folding ladder rear sight, graduated from 2 to 10, with "W W/ P" and "V/ P/ eagle head" on the left side of the barrel and "1855" on the tang. The lock is stamped "1855/ N.HAVEN" vertically behind the hammer and "E.WHITNEY/U.S." under the flash pan. Smooth straight grip stock, with sling swivels, two brass barrel bands, a pair of oval cartouches opposite the lock plate, large patch box containing a multi-tool on the right side of the butt and a "US" marked buttplate. With a brown leather sling and a brass and cork muzzle plug.

Condition: Very good, with a fine polished appearance overall, showing some handling marks and pitting. Stock is fine with a few repairs, with areas of filler on the forearm and comb, along with scattered pressure dents. The front sight is a replacement, and the sling is cracked. Mechanically excellent. This is a good example of a scarce and important Harpers Ferry Arsenal Second Alteration U.S. Whitney 1841 Rifle.
