U.S Standing Rock Indian Reservation 1889 Shotgun
This is a unique French Model 1853 Snider "Hunting" Zulu 10 gauge breech loading shotgun. The French Model 1853 was known to have been traded to the Northern Plains Tribes through Canada with various wonderful pieces previously being sold. Our company has sold two French model 1853 altered firearms both tacked by the Blackfoot Native American Indians. This piece shows a later added silver badge being marked, "U.S. INDIAN POLICE STANDING ROCK INDIAN AGENCY 1889." The shotgun was also stamped into the wood, "U.S STANDING ROCK INDIAN AGENCY" and "A.J.H." on the right side and "A.J.H." (an arsenal mark), "UNITED STATES INDIAN POLICE 1889", "US STANDING ROCK INDIAN AGENCY" and "1889 ARMS AMMO". The piece shows wonderful brass covered iron tacks in a geometric possibly Togia Language design on both sides. French Model 1853 started its life as a percussion muzzle-loading rifle in the 1840's and 1857's and then were later converted to accept the Snider breech-loading system beginning in 1867 allowing the acceptance of a cartridge (later a shot-shell usually in 10 or 12 gauge). These converted rifles features a carbine breech loading system with smooth bore referred to as the French model 1853-1867 Snider Conversion "ZULU" (aka hunter) Shotgun. The metal shows a dark finish with the stock also having a dark finish and handling wear of age and use with the cartouche's being crisp (post conversion addition). The breech and barrel show various inspection marks including the Leige Belgian oval touch mark. Antique Firearm requires NO FFL.
