U.S. Springfield Trapdoor Rifle
This is a nice example of an arsenal assembled Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor rifle with various later production parts mostly from a Model 1884. The top of the breech end of the barrel is marked with the letter "A" and "V / P / eagle head / P" on the left rear. The top of the breechblock is marked "U.S. / MODEL / 1884" and the serial number appears on the top rear of the receiver. The lock is marked with the eagle shield motif and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD". Blade front and Buffington rear sights, all blue finish with casehardened breechblock and mounted with a full one piece straight grip stock with sharp boxed "SWP / 1889" cartouche on the left wrist, circled "P" behind the lower tang, iron carbine style buttplate and sling swivels. Complete with an original button head ramrod.
BBL: 32 5/8 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 45/70 Govt.
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 131049
Condition: Very fine. The rifle is unissued, but poorly stored showing 85% original blue finish on the barrel with minor oxidation along the top, as well on the top of the rear sight. The buttplate also has minor oxidation on the tang, some flaking on the heel and the balance retaining the original bright blue finish. The lock and hammer retain 95% original blue finish and the breechblock retains 90% original case colors with some minor spotting. With the exception of a rough area on the right side forearm (see photo), the stock is excellent with a few minor dings and handling marks. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. With a little cleaning this will be a nice Trapdoor rifle.
