U.S. Springfield Trapdoor Rifle with Bayonet
This is an assembly of various Models of Trapdoor rifle. The rifle is equipped with the Model 1879 ski slope style rear sight with the graduation markings on the left side, three click tumbler, low arch breech block and serrated, and checkered trigger. The barrel, lock and hammer were finished blue and the remaining parts casehardened. The lock plate is marked with the Springfield Eagle and Shield motif followed by "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD", the top of the breechblock is marked: "U.S. / MODEL / 1873" , the left side rear of the barrel is stamped with "V / P / Eaglehead / P" proof and inspection marks and there is a "D" on top at the breech. The buttplate is stamped "U.S." in front of the top screw. The left side of the rear sight base and the upper left rear sight leaf are marked "R" (Rifle). The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the boxed script inspector's initials "SWP / 1884". The bottom of the stock behind the lower tang is stamped with a "B.D.R." followed by the circled "P". Complete with a "US / S" marked socket bayonet.

Condition: Fine. The barrel, bands, lock and hammer have 40% blue with the balance a smooth brown patina. The frame and breechblock show some dark original case colors with much of the original casehardening pattern remaining mixed with smooth brown patina. The stock is also fine with some chipping at the buttplate edge and overall scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The cartouche and markings are clear. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is very good with a mix of smooth brown and original finish, and some minor pitting.
