U.S. Springfield Trapdoor & Krag Bayonet Pair
Lot containing two antique U.S. issue bayonets. The first is a fine condition bayonet for the Model 1873 “Trapdoor Springfield” .45-70 rifle. The uncleaned blade is fairly bright with normal patches of brown. The scabbard retains a fine leather upper with brass swivel and good blue/black metal sheath. The second is a “U.S.” and “1897” stamped and dated bayonet made for the 1896 Springfield .30-40 caliber Krag rifle. This bayonet was made with a wood handle and bright blade that could also double as a hand held fighting instrument. The blued metal sheath and hanger show some surface age rust that has never been cleaned or restored. The bright blade shows some normal scratches and dings from actual use and retains fine markings. The wood handle and spring locking mechanism in the butt are fine. The pair weigh 2lbs 12oz.
