U.S. Springfield Model 1973/1879 Upgraded Trapdoor Carbine with Documented Issuance to the 8th Calvary

This is an upgraded example of a Custer era U.S. Model 1873 trapdoor Carbine that has been documented as being issued to the 8th U.S. Calvary regiment. After the Civil War it was apparent to the U.S. military that their Calvary units were disseminated and very thin. So in July 1866 Congress authorized four additional Calvary units be established; the 7th, 8th 9th and 10th Calvary Regiment. The 8th was a major Cavalry unit that engaged numerous Indian tribes from 1868-1880, primarily in the south western part of the United States, but also fought against the Sioux, Comanche, Arapaho and Apache Indian tribes, during the Indian wars. This carbine was documented as being issued to the 8th Cavalry in "Man at Arms", Vol 21, issue number 6, dated Dec. 1999, on page 45. The serial number of this carbine would have placed its manufacture some where around circa 1875-76 and it has the low arch breechblock marked "U.S./MODEL/1873", with the lock plate marked "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" with a three click tumbler and no date. The left side of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/Eagle Head/P" proof and it is fitted with a Model 1879 pattern buckhorn rear sight graduated from 8-15 on the slide and 1-8 on the side of the base. It is fitted with a standard carbine stock with the sling bar and ring on the left side with a standard steel buttplate with a three piece cleaning rod in the trap compartment.
