U.S. Springfield Model 1903 Rifle with Model 1905 Bayonet
Springfield Model 1903 rifle with oil-finished walnut type "S", stock, with grasping grooves and parkerized finish. The receiver is roll-stamped: "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/MODEL 1903./1308474". The barrel is marked: "SA/Ordnance 'Shell & Flame' Insigina/2-29" behind the front sight base. The rifle has a folding leaf rear sight with polished face and 2750 yard center notch, flat face windage knob, seriated trigger and un-checkered buttplate. The stock has two reinforcing bolts. The rifle has three encircled "P" proof marks on the underside of the wrist behind the trigger guard from multiple arsenal overhauls. One of the proof marks has a script "P" which indicates that this stock was probably taken from a M1903 manufactured prior to 1918. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the Springfield Armory overhaul inspection mark "S.A.D.A.L." and a second un-identified overhaul mark "AAL". Rifles in this configuration were furnished to the Marine Corps when it expanded in 1941 and 1942; many Marine Model 1903s subsequently saw action on Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands in 1942 and 1943.The rifle has a stamped front sight cover, nickel-plated oiler and new production russet leather Model 1907 sling. The rifle is complete with a Springfield Armory M1905 Bayonet dated "1908". The bayonet has a bright blade and is complete with a russet leather scabbard.
BBL: 24 inch
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 30-06
Finish: parkerized
Grips:
Serial Number: 1308474
Condition: Very fine as arsenal rebuilt. The rifle retains 95% plus of the Springfield Armory gray-green parkerized finish. The receiver markings are sharp, the barrel markings are light. The stock and handguard are in excellent condition. The edges of the grasping grooves are sharp and the stock inspection marks and firing proofs are crisp. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is in fair overall condition; the blade has been cleaned and has scattered light pitting and there are two reinforcement pins in the counter-guard. The leather scabbard has heavy wear and the swivel belt hook is broken. This is a fine example of a Springfield Armory 1903 that was overhauled on one or more occasions prior to WWII.
