U.S. Springfield Model 1896 Krag carbine, 30-40 Krag cal., 22” round barrel, wood half stock, #68342. Original letter from Springfield Research Service, signed by Franklin B. Mallory, indicates “ . . .Krag Model 1896 carbine serial number 68342, please be advised that the records of the U.S. Army Adjutant General’s Office show that this arm was issued to Trooper Charles J. Ranlett, Troop I, 1st USV Cavalry (‘Rough Riders’)”. Also included are copies of Trooper Ranlett’s service records from the National Archives. The gun itself is in overall good to very good condition showing a plum brown patina to the barrel and light patina to the receiver with some silvery case to the receiver magazine and traces of original fiery blue on the top flat of the bolt assembly. The wood is in overall good + condition with scattered nicks, mars and scratches from carry and storage and the circle “P” inspector’s mark is clearly present behind the trigger guard and the 1896 dated cartouche is also present on the left side of the stock at the wrist behind the saddle ring and bar that is also present; accompanied by a US marked thick leather scabbard in overall good condition.
