U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Saddle Ring Carbine
The primary cavalry carbine from the post-Civil War era up through the late 1890s, the Springfield Trapdoor saw service through out the Indian Wars until the adoption of the Krag bolt action. Features the fully adjustable "C" marked Buffington rear sight, the hooded integral front sight base and blade, three click tumbler, Springfield lock, casehardened low arch breechblock marked "U.S./ MODEL/ 1884", two piece trigger guard, serrated trigger and buttplate with the trapdoor. Saddle ring and bar mounted on the left side of the stock. The rear of the barrel is correctly marked with the "V/ P/eagle head/P" proof and the lock plate is correctly marked "US/SPRINGFIELD" next to the US Eagle. The left side of the stock has a boxed "SWP/1887" cartouche and a script circle "P" proof in the grip area. It is complete with the original three-piece cleaning rod inside the buttstock compartment.

Condition: Very good, with a mixture of smooth and mottled brown patina on the barrel, a brown mottled patina on the breechblock and hammer, and a mixed gray on the lock plate, turning with smooth and dark in the protected areas. Strong traces of blue remain on the trigger guard, mixed with a brown patina, gray on the high edges. Overall there is some pin point pitting and some light surface rust. The stock is good with numerous minor dings, dents and scratches overall, and some moderate dents and gouges on top and underside of the buttstock, partially obscuring the "P" proof. Mechanically excellent.
